I had posted a picture for today and was about to go to bed when a huge line of storms came rolling in. I absolutely hate thunderstorms- always have- but for the sake of my blog, I got out my tripod and camera and sat on the porch to wait for the storm.
It was extremely eery out…we had hit 105 degrees today (and while I don’t generally complain about the heat, it was beastly out) so the heat, combined with the impending storm made for a hazy, dark sky. For a few minutes, it was very still out, then out of nowhere, the winds picked up, the temperature dropped about 15 degrees and you could start to see the flashes in the distance. All in all, I think we sat outside for a little over an hour, I shot over 300 (mostly random) pictures, and I ended up with only 2 shots with any visible lightning in them. Such is the life of a photographer I guess! As Peter Lik always says “the greater the effort, the greater the reward” (c’mon- I can’t be the only dork that watches him!)

And I caught this one earlier in the night when I didn’t have my settings set quite right- so its a bit dark, but you can really see the fine line that the lightning really is.

Isn’t it amazing what doing this 365 project will inspire to do! I must say I have a ton of really fun photos this year that I wouldn’t have if it weren’t for the project, so I for one am really happy I’m doing it. I think this photo is much the same for you…and not only the photo but the fact that it made you sit and look at something that you normally would have just let pass you by. Nice job!
