2.28.11 ~ 59/365

I’ve noticed many people on other blogs (and facebook) doing something called the “30 Day Photo Challenge”, and I thought it looked interesting, so I researched the 30 “topics” (They can be found here). There’s a lot of good ideas on there, so I’m going to use some of them as a jumping board for photo inspiration. I’m not going to do it every day, but just pick and choose which ones I want to do (some topics- such as “picture of your favorite band” aren’t possible, because it’s not like I’m going to a concert tonight! But others might serve well as inspiration for days when I may be at a loss for a photo).

I’ll start today with the first “prompt” – A photo of yourself with 15 facts.
Me:
(yeah- it’s a cell phone picture- I had my SLR, but I wasn’t about to whip it out in the middle of Payless…lol)

Me with one of my favorite things- flip flops! (And those ridiculous sunglasses aren’t mine- I was just playing!)

—————————————
15 Facts:

1. Crafting is my life. If I could spend my every waking moment creating, I would. I love to sew, knit, crochet, quilt, make jewerly, design clothing and accessories, stained glass, fused glass, needlework, scrapbooking, and of course photography! I like to say that I that I don’t think outside of the box- I throw the box away. My business cards even state “doing strange things in the name of art”.

2. I love Disney. I am a huge Disney parks trivia buff- I own about 50 different Walt Disney World (and some Disneyland) books and documentary DVD’s. Go ahead- ask me anything!

3. I love the beach almost as much as I love Disney. I live about 20 minutes from the beach, and nothing beats taking the top off of my Jeep in the summer and heading to the beach for a day of relaxation, shell collecting and of course boogie boarding in the waves! I ❤ all aspects of the beach- the smell of the salt water, the sound of the waves, the feel of the sand between your toes and the warmth of the sun.

4. If it has to do with Japan- I'm in love with it. I love sushi (and I'm fairly adventurous when it comes to the raw items I'll eat), cherry blossoms, Japanese art, culture, traditions, etc. Visiting Japan is on my bucket list.

5. Speaking of Bucket List- mine is about a mile long. Some things are big- others not so much, but they're all significant to me. Some of the items on my list include- run a 5k, visit every Disney park in the world, ride in a hot air balloon, go on a boat, learn how to play the guitar, surf, see the Leaning Tower of Pisa, be well known for something, own my own craft business, etc.

6. I’m an old soul- I adore things from the 50’s- 80’s. If it’s retro, I’m all about it.

7. I was a band geek in High School. I only joined initially because their yearly band trip was to Disney and I wanted to go. In the end, joining band was one of the best decisions I made in high school- I made some of the closest friends I ever had (and still have), have some of the greatest memories, and fell in love with Twirling- which I continued even after high school, and went on to teach/compete in while I was in college. (I should break out some of those pictures one day– especially if you’re looking for a good laugh…)

8. I’m a stereotypical blonde- I do/say some pretty dumb things from time to time. Unfortunately, my family doesn’t let me live many of the blonde things I’ve said in my past… but I’m okay with that 🙂

(Jeez- 15 facts about yourself is difficult!).

9. I hate silence. I need to have music or the tv on at all times. If I’m in the car, I need to have my iPod because I love music (and if there’s a new song on my iPod, I have to play it over and over and over until I learn every word of it- there can’t be a song that I don’t know the words to!) If I’m at home working in my sewing room or on my computer I need to have the TV on. I don’t necessarily watch it, but I need the noise. Same thing at night- I must fall asleep to the TV. Silence drives me crazy! Must be my ADD…lol

10. I love playing games- board games, trivia games, and especially word games. I have no less than 15 different word games on my iPod, including Bananagrams (my favorite!) and an iPhone Scrabble that I play with other friends on their phones. This is sort of ironic because I can’t spell to save my life, but I still love to play!

11. I had to save this for number 11– I wish on 11:11. I always see numbers like that in my daily life- and things like this fascinate me.

12. I believe in psychics, horoscopes, and fortune cookies. I also believe in ghosts and other supernatural happenings. Everything happens for a reason!

13. I am deathly afraid of bugs- I will scream bloody murder (and I’m not even exaggerating here) if one comes near me or god forbid on me.

14. I am currently somewhat happily single. I’m enjoying the single life for now, but ready to move on. (I could use this blog as a singles bar- anyone have a cute guy they want to set me up with? lol)

15. I am “severe procrastinater” in several areas. My mom said I had to include this. I get stuff done- but not at the pace she wishes I got things done! (And I guess that would be why that “fact” is last…lol)

I guess that’s my life in a list….lol. I hope some of you join me on this 30 day photo challenge. (Good luck with your 15 facts- it’s harder than it looks!)

2.27.11 ~ 58/365

A few months ago, phriend told me about a photo contest at a local winery. She was the reigning champion (three months in a row!!) and I guess she thought she needed some competition, so she asked me if I wanted to come. We went back again last night to take some more pictures for February’s contest. We spent nearly 3 hours there (where does the time go? Lol) setting up crazy shots (can we say wrapping a string of lights around a chair just so I could get some bokeh? Yup- that was us…). Here are two of my favorite shots:

(ps- I’m not home- and didn’t get a chance to post my picture before I left this morning- I’m doing this from the WordPress App- so if somethings not right I won’t know until I get home to a real computer tonight- bear with me!)

Continuing with pictures from Asbury Park- At the south end of the boardwalk sits a casino (not a gambling casino, but rather a large building that housed many indoor activities, including an indoor skating rink and a theater). Connected to this building is a very ornate carousel house.
Like everything else in Asbury Park, the carousel house now sits empty. From what I’ve read, the carousel was removed in the late 80’s/early 90’s, and since then the building has sat untouched (although, Springsteen did hold a concert for less than 100 people there last December). The round carousel house has an elevated ceiling, and several large (open air) doors with giant medallions above them. Because of the setting sun casting long shadows, I was able to get a wonderfully distorted picture of the interior of the building with my fisheye lens.

2.23.11 ~ 54/365

A big checkmark off of something on my bucket list today (sort of). Let me explain.
It’s no secret that I love old things, and I love “roadside america” (quirky things that can be found all around the country)- “Tilly” fits the bill for both items- he’s old, and he certainly is a quirky roadside attraction.
A bit of a history lesson today- in Asbury Park, NJ, there used to stand a building called Palace Amusements. It was a huge building, erected in 1888 on the southern tip of the boardwalk in Asbury Park. Inside the building was an amusement park- one of the few that survived the great depression. There was a fun house, a crystal maze, an antique carousel, skooter cars and an arcade (among many other things) all surrounded by larger than life (and goofier that life) clowns and other characters.
On the outside of this sea-foam green building were a few murals, one of them being a clown-like head with a giant toothy grin. In 1988, Palace Amusements closed, and over the next decade, the building began to decay. In 2004, the building was set to be demolished, but a group (aptly named “Save Tilly”) was able to save the Tilly mural, as well as a few others from the building to be put back up on a new building at a later date.
This mural is still in a storage facility in Asbury Park, and hasn’t seen the light of day since 2004. Ever since I was little, I’ve loved the image of Tilly (he’s branded on many items at the Jersey Shore- magnets, postcards, t-shirts, etc), but have never (and may never) see him in person. He was even featured in a Springsteen publicity photo in the 70’s

Which brings me to todays picture (phew–you never thought you’d see a picture with all my ramblings, did you?)
A bar in Asbury Park, the Wonder Bar, has painted a replica of Tilly on their building- so I just squinted and pretended it was the real Tilly and snapped away.

Tilly!!!

The Wonder Bar

I tried to make it feel like I was back in the 50’s/60’s – the heyday of Palace Amusements and Tilly

And last- you can’t go to Asbury Park and not pass by The Stone Pony (the club where it is rumored that Bruce Springsteen got his start)

2.21.11 ~ 52/365

I’ve been wanting to try this for some time now- finally got the chance to play this morning.

“Fire in a Glass”

I went about it two different ways- I really wanted a true black background, but I think the rest of the image looks “fake”. What do you think? Which one do you like better?

ETA:
I learned how to adjust my histogram in Photoshop today, so I took another crack at my picture. This time I was better able to make a true black. I also cropped it differently and added some lyrics! 🙂

2.20.11 ~ 51/365

I was lacking creative juices today– so out of desperation, I put together this picture in the middle of Jo-Anns (a fabric and craft store). I found these little “de-stress” balls in the quilt section- I loved the little sayings they had on them (especially the blue one on the right- it describes me perfectly!)
I think this is the first time I didn’t use my SLR for my picture of the day!

2.19.11 ~ 50/365

If you’ve been following my blog since the beginning, you’ll notice that “phriend” and I take lots of little day trips to find new and interesting things to photograph. We’ve been doing it for about 4 months now, through the dead of winter (and all the other crazy weather we’ve been having around here). We were concerned if we’d have as much fun when the weather got warm and we weren’t outside like nuts freezing our you-know-what’s off, sacrificing our cameras to the elements, or who knows what else (to read about some of our adventures- Click here – she’s really summed it up well!) We got that chance this week as Mother Nature gave us a reprieve from her toe-biting cold with a few days in the 50’s (hey– to us, that’s tropical!). We took full advantage of that and went down to a seaport village or a “working maritime village” as they put it. Its historic houses and lighthouse made for plenty of photographic opportunities!

One of my favorites

2.18.11 ~ 49/365

Its February 18th today and the temperature topped out around 65 degrees! If you would have told me a month ago (as we were swimming under a foot of snow) that four short weeks from then we’d have a day where I could wear flip flops and open every window in the house, I wouldn’t have believed it.
To celebrate, a friend and I went down to the beach and spent the morning window shopping (I say window shopping because a lot of the stores on the island close for the winter- but it was still nice to just be outside and walk around). We then grabbed some sandwiches and sat on the beach to eat lunch. While we sat there, two surfers entertained us (even though it was close to 70 degrees, we had to remind ourselves that it’s still February- I can’t imagine how cold the water must have been!)

After I got home, there was still plenty of daylight (and warm weather) left to enjoy, so I sat outside on the deck and gave myself a pedicure— my toes have been cooped up in boots for too long and wanted to show off the new cute sandals I bought today!

2.17.11 ~ 48/365

A few weeks ago, I mentioned that I’m trying to learn Photoshop. At a friend’s suggestion, I signed up for an online course (link is at the bottom of this post) to learn more. I’m so glad I signed up for this- we’re only 4 days into the class, but I’ve learned so many little tips and tricks!

I was never so excited to receive homework as I was for this course. Our first “assignment” was to take a picture and add text to it. As soon as I saw this picture of a tiki man that I took at a “surf museum” that phriend and I visited, I knew I had to pair it with the quote from the Brady Bunch episode where the Brady’s visit Hawaii and Bobby finds the “tabu idol”. I also added some retro brush stamps from a brush pack I downloaded. I thought it added that “Brady 70’s” feel to it.

Here was my first attempt at adding text– I liked it at first, but now I feel that it’s lacking something. I don’t know what though…lol.
(Note-I cheated- this picture is from two years ago. But it begged to have these Fifth Dimension lyrics added to it)
